Just Sayin'

I saw the new trailer for Season 5 of Downton Abbey today and I have only one thing to say: WOW! Like, I can't even express how excited I am right now. It looks so good! There was kissing and fire (literally and figuratively - I'm sort of concerned about the literal fire) and people making dramatic pronouncements in English accents! Kissing! I'm pretty sure no one kissed anyone on Downton Abbey for at least two seasons (well, excluding Mary's ill-fated venture with the infamous Mr. Pamuk, but let's ignore that), so it's getting pretty racy up in here. Not to mention that there's all this family drama going on: Mary's probably going to re-marry, Edith is a baby mama, Tom (possibly) has a love interest, and there's at least one love triange (a la Twilight). So, I recently heard that Disney is making a live action version version of Cinderella , and I can honestly say that I've never been more excited for anything in my entire life (except for maybe The Winds of Winter , but that's a separate blog). Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Disney is making this movie just for me because they know how that I've seen Ever After at least 25 times and if there was a Disney version of that movie, it would shoot right past Titanic to the top of my guilty pleasure movies list. I'm such a girl.  Now, I'm not just excited about this movie because I like Cinderella , although I do like Cinderella. I'm mostly excited because every actor ever, from every TV show I've ever liked   is going to be in this movie. Let me paint a picture for you. Richard Madden is going to play Prince Charming. Warning: Contains Downton Abbey spoilers. So a few days ago I wrote a blog about my predictions for Season 5 of Downton Abbey and, in the blog I mentioned that I hope Mary marries Lord Gillingham. Since I know that's a controversial opinion for a lot of people, I wanted to take a few moments to justify myself. To start with, A lot of people argue that Mary should marry Charles Blake because he is more like Matthew. That is precisely why I think Mary shouldn't go for Blake. I mean, she has said many times that she wasn't the same person she was when she met Matthew. I think that's true; Matthew certainly changed Mary. So, maybe, what Mary needs at this point in her life is not another Matthew. Mary mellowed a lot when she was with Matthew, she became a lot nicer and more considerate. I'm not saying that Blake isn't nice, it's just, I could see him with season 1 Mary much easier than I could see him with season 4 Mary. Season 4 Mary seems to do well...

Game of Thrones and True Blood haven't started yet, Big Bang Theory is still on its season break, but perhaps most horribly, I'm going to have to wait another whole year for the new season of Downtown Abbey . However, in between binge watching 'best of Salem the talking cat' videos on YouTube and reliving the episode when the Backstreet Boys guest starred on Sabrina , I decided to make a couple of predictions about Downton Abbey season 5 to make the waiting time go faster. So, I used to think that I was really weird because, for some reason, I am constantly confusing Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones . But it turns out that it's not just me! (I still think I'm really weird, but for different reasons). It turns out that people have written whole articles about why Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones are basically the same show; there's even an Abbey of Thrones tumblr page ! Like, no one's beheading Mrs. Patmore over a salty pudding and the Iron Bank of Bravos is not going to repossess Downton because Lord Grantham lost the family fortune. Compared to Game of Thrones , the dinners and garden parties of Downton seem pretty insignificant, but what makes them both so compelling as shows is that the characters take their own lives seriously. To the characters on Downtown Abbey, a cricket match is just as important as a battle. Make of that what you will, but the point is that the characters are absorbed in their own world, which means t...

After the massacre that was season three of Downton Abbey, season four was refreshingly cheerful. I'll admit that after Sybil and Matthew, two of my favorite characters, died, I was concerned that the show would fall apart. But, I have to say it's nice to see that season four has returned to some of the great Downton traditions: Edith's guy problems, Thomas schemes, and Mary's never ending parade of suitors. Downton has the unique gift of turning a show that is completely uneventful into something absolutley riveting. Downton Abbey is back to doing it Pride and Prejudice style. I mean, It just isn't the same show if Mary doesn't get proposed to at least once a season. That's not to say I wasn't upset about what happened to Matthew. But, on TV you can't linger on grief too much. The actor left the show, but the series must go on. Fortunately, Downton has a strong ensemble cast, so the lose of one character doesn't ruin the show.
