Slytherin Discrimination

I'm not sure if I've blogged about this before but, if I have, I'm going to blog about it again because it annoys me. Why is there so much prejudice against Slytherins? Like, I get that a lot of them went Death Eater and started chilling with Voldemort, but not all of them. Like Professor Slughorn, he's a Slytherin, but when we first meet him, he's disguised as an arm chair. How can you hate an arm chair? There's nothing threatening about that.

Don't be a Death Eater
Besides, all of that Voldemort stuff was over in the 90s. A lot of weird stuff happened in the 90s - overalls, neon, spandex, boy bands - I think it's time we moved past it. Let me just do a quick review for those of you who aren't up on your world events from the past twenty years. Voldemort was defeated for the first time on Halloween, 1981 (Muggle years). Let's call this the Interim Period (IP). In 1995, or 15 IP, let's call this the beginning of the Second Voldemortian Age (SV). Anyway, the point is  that in 1998, or 3 SV, Voldemort is finally defeated. Voldemort first rose to power in the 70s (I'm not sure if it had anything to do with bell bottoms and disco, but all and all that was a bad decade) during the First Wizarding War, let's call that time the First Voldemortian age (FV). Anyway, for all the thousands of years before 1 FV, let's call that time BV (before Voldemort), Slytherins were just normal people, eating Triscuits and putting their pants on one leg at a time, just like everyone else.

Just because Voldemort happened to be a Slytherin and all of his supporters were Slytherins does not mean that all Slytherins were Voldemort Supporters! Especially now in the AV age (After Voldemort), no one seems to be able to separate Slytherin and Voldemort in their minds. As a Slytherin, my thinking is that the house existed for thousands of years before Voldemort, it will continue on without him. We don't need Voldemort. In fact, another famous Slytherin, Severus Snape, was instrumental in bringing Voldemort down. In the words of Harry Potter, "he was the bravest man I ever knew".

This famous quote has since been adapted into a song by The Ministry of Magic. Even though the band has known Gryffindorian tendencies, they are able to respect Slytherin. Other bands also present glowing Slytherin testimonials. In their song, It's Not Half Bad, The Parselmouths state "Everyone says Slytherin house is the worst place to be...but there are good parts too that you may not have seen, we get to wear green, are expected to be mean...get to goof off in potions". Here, The Parselmouths paint the image of the carefree Slytherin, cruelly maligned by the Gryffindor-loving media. Draco and the Malfoys make a similar point with their song, It's a Slytherin World, "the trees are green," they argue, "the grass is green, even the color of your [Harry Potter's] dead mom's eyes is green, it's a Slytherin world". A Slytherin world it is indeed; have some Slytherin pride!

So, you see, Slytherin is about more than just death and destruction. Plus, I'm pretty sure that when Voldemort first came to power, a lot of people got confused and thought that the Death Eaters were just a new punk band. It's about wearing green and talking to snakes; there are muggles who do that every day at the zoo!

Just sayin'
